3S Artspace invites applications to our annual design competition, Project Upcycle. Together with our partners RecoverGirl and Goodwill of Northern New England, we seek to promote regional designers and sustainable fashion through the Project Upcycle design competition. Project Upcycle brings emerging designers together to foster connections, encourage creativity, and inspire growth. We are helping to plant the seeds for sustainable fashion brands in New England and beyond- and developing an audience that will support you.
About Project Upcycle
Who is eligible to apply? Designers (and aspiring designers), aged 18+, residing in New England, (ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, RI), with less than 5 years of professional design experience. Everyone from students to self-taught designers to working designers to retirees is enthusiastically encouraged to apply.
What is the challenge? Eight emerging designers are selected to participate. This group is challenged to transform secondhand clothing (donated by Goodwill of NNE) into a gala-worthy outfit in a day and a half. The outfit is then featured at a runway event where the judges select the top three designs.
Where is it held? Project Upcycle takes place at 3S Artspace, in Portsmouth, NH.
When is it? Thursday, March 26th (late afternoon) - Saturday, March 28 (late night), 2019. Sample Timeline:Thursday: Welcome, Meet the Team, VIP eventFriday: 9am- 9pm Design/Create/Model fittingsSaturday: 9am-2pm Final sewing/fittings
How are designers selected? Applicants are selected by committee. Each year, we seek designers with vision, skill, creativity, and a desire to challenge themselves (and the status quo) in the spirit of sustainable fashion.If you become a Project Upcycle designer, the designs you create on site will be judged on execution, creative reuse of materials, and styling. Four judges will be announced shortly and will feature established design and industry professionals.
If selected, what would I need to be able to participate? All designers need to bring their own sewing machine and sewing tool kit (scissors, pins, measuring tape, etc.) Back-up machines available in the event of a break-down.
What about housing? Food? 3S Artspace is committed to providing housing for out-of-town designers. You may elect to stay in a hotel (at your own expense) or join the team in a group housing/host situation. All meals are provided during your stay.
A cash prize will be awarded to the top three designers. (First: $1,500, Second: $1,000, Third $500. Prizes come with no strings attached. Use the funds as you wish!
